TV as a Regulating Object:

Emotive and Affective Textures of the Living Room

Somatic experiencing has been a trending therapy style in contemporary counselling where therapists focus on the relationship between emotions and their reverberations across different parts of one’s body. Objects can also be a component of this relationship. Things often create vibrations, smells, and even cause us harm. They participate in these relationships in different forms, such as speakers, vibrators, or the highway I am sleeping right next to. We often carry ointments for our ailments or light a candle, an incense, to change the smell of the living room. I call these different textures of the house. We carry our personal space, in the form of belongings, in our bags or pockets. What does this tell me as an anthropologist when I talk to people?
